What is SEM/SEO?

Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is the placement of advertisements in search results relevant to the keywords/keyphrases entered by the user. All the major search engines (Google, Yahoo and MSN) have differing systems for the placement of ads. Each system facilities the placement of bids on keywords/keyphrases. For example if a company wished to be placed at the top of search rankings for "car insurance" they would have to bid a higher amount per click than it's competitors. In addition consideration is given to the quality of the ad and the relevance of the landing page. Click bids can range in value from 0.5p to several pounds depending on the competition for the keyword. A number of tools have been developed to aid the management of bids across multiple keywords and multiple search engines , two of which are Atlas Search and bidBuddy. Depending on client requirements we are able to use either system to manage campaigns.

The main benefits of SEM/SEO over other methods of online marketing are as follows:

Search engine optimisation (SEO) is where site pages are built to specifically improve performance in natural search engine results. This is achieved in a number of ways, most importantly:

  • Make sure the structure of the page is correct i.e. tags are used appropriately
  • Build up external links from relevant high ranking third parties
  • Ensure internal site links are created using appropriate keywords
  • Improve copy to highlight keyword and keyphrase usage
